Fashion Star

Voguette.com chats up Florida-based fashion designer and  — drum roll, please — newbie reality TV star — Nikki Poulos. Here she dishes the NBC show, Fashion Star, and her boho aesthetic and more.

You’re appearing on NBC’s Fashion Star premiering March 13! What’s it like working alongside Elle Macpherson, Jessica Simpson, John Varvatos (another fellow Greek!) and Nicole Richie?

Well, let’s just put it right out there — these are some very glamorous and stylish ladies! And John is pretty suave too! It was fun. Elle is amazingly beautiful, laidback and tall. Jessica is funny and super switched on, business-wise.  Nicole and I connected most in our design sensibility because she is funny and very far-left of-center. John is a real sweetheart and I felt that of the three mentors, John was the one I connected with the most intellectually.

What was the best part about being on Fashion Star?

As an independent designer, Fashion Star afforded me the opportunity to achieve the exposure that an independent designer can only dream of. Also, as an independent designer, we mostly work in solo situations, so it was fantastic to be able to meet, kvetch and work with my peers.

Describe your collection for those not-in-the-know:

I term my style “modern boho-chic” which is defined by its easy glamour. I use mostly jersey fabrics which drape really well, are super flowy and comfortable.  I’m obsessed with graphic prints and sassy color. You can’t be shy to wear my show-stopping statement pieces.

You reside in Delray Beach and hail from Sydney, Australia, how do these locales inspire your beach-y chic designs?

You know, I love the beach but I also love to travel and explore new places, foods, and scenery. Sydney is a very cosmopolitan city but it’s also a city laden with amazing pristine beaches. So it’s really just what I’m used to and what’s in my heart.

What is new with your collection?

My current collections are primarily Resort and Swim, but this year I’m putting out my first Fall collection. My customer is a reflection of me — she’s well-traveled and cosmopolitan. With my new Fall 2012 collection I’m giving her a new look, a new direction, with pieces she can wear in the city. Instead of wearing my collections just “from beach to dinner” she can now go from “work to cocktails.”

When did you have that aha! moment you knew that fashion design was for you?

I’ve always been creative. As a kid, I made clothes for myself from an early age. I have always loved building things and working with my hands. I kind of feel like I was born to do it.

We love that you support our local economy and all your pieces are produced in the U.S. Why is this notion near and dear to your heart?

I believe firmly in supporting my local economy and community. By supporting the people and our communities, everyone benefits. Sure, I could produce offshore and make more money, but I can produce here and make a profit too. Also, I wouldn’t have the control over production that I do here — quality control is very important to me.

If you weren’t a designer what would plan B be for you?

I always thought it would have been nice to be either a sculptor or an emergency room surgeon.

If the world had to be one color, what color would it be?

It would be a multitude of bold colors, clashing, in a sea of graphic prints.

You’re stranded on a deserted island, what is your one luxury item?

My iPhone because it contains my world and my access to the world (as long as there is service!).

Describe the perfect day:

Strong coffee, an old-school newspaper, beach, surf, work, a great dinner and good wine.

4) Top trend on the street: From foulards to rain boots, leopard prints ran wild among all the French Voguettes’ chic outfits. Get on trend with this BB Dakota Gisa Mini Dress.

Our favorite maxi & mini issa looks

Fall is in full swing and the holiday season is quickly approaching, which ultimately means the decline of both our monotonous weekends & inventory of party-appropriate attire. In the spirit of the holidays let us delve into the deets about exactly how to wear Issa dresses both maxi and mini to your next festive gathering. As we always say, fashion is all in the details.

MAXI. If you plan on a certain charity gala or black tie event this year or next, we don’t have to tell you there will most certainly be persistent photogs scurrying around the joint. Get on the best-dressed list with Issa’s Solid Silk Crepe long halter dress. Timeless and flattering should describe your silhouette of choice when there is even the slightest potential to be in this weekend’s news feed. If you like a classic look go with simple silver accessories, but I always like a little flair – add a chunky necklace or colorful clutch to amp up your look. Remember to choose only one statement piece or you will look like you’re trying too hard you will look way over done.

MINI. Issa’s short silk jersey dresses are flirty and cheeky – similar to a modern day Marilyn Monroe. I’m a sucker for edgy twists on an elegant piece. My favorite way to wear the classic Issa Silk Jersey Long Sleeve Dress is with a great pair of platform booties (my favorites include Camilla Scovgaard’s Wedge Booties and Christian Louboutin’s Daf Booty). Warm or cold, I would adorn the lovely Issa dress with BB Dakota’s faux fur vest*. Don’t forget to add sparkly cocktail rings!

Behind the Scenes a Fabulously Chic Photo Shoot

Big Buddha Quilted Uptown Bag Brandy Melville Kayla sweater, BB Dakota sequin Shorts

The Voguette.com team recently put together this stunning photo shoot in an exclusive Florida location. Model Rachel Zimmerman from Wilhelmina evoked a fabulous fashion blogger getting ready to go out for a night on the town. Alberto Gonzalez, Voguette.com’s photographer extraordinaire captured these stunning images on our set for the day, a secluded home in Florida’s Coconut Grove. Sequins by BB Dakota, retro floral prints by MinkPink and glam vintage accessories gave this story a cozy, yet fashionably rich look. Our styling inspiration came from what an every day girl would wear to go out to a VIP fashion event where she might run into Rachel Zoe.

10 (more) Reasons We Love Issa Dresses

There are many more… but these are the top ten.

  1. Issa dresses are easy to wear. I can literally throw any of this label’s dresses on for a beach day, a cocktail party, a wedding, or a shopping trip and look flawless.
  2. I’ll wear mine forever. From Marilyn, to Twiggy, to SJP, the silhouette is synonymous with classic sensuality and will be worn for decades to come.
  3. They’re flattering on every body shape. Designer Daniella Helayel made this brand specifically for women of any shape and size. The dresses are only fitted where it counts (at the waist) and the flowing silk jersey drapes beautifully on curves (or lack thereof).
  4. They transcend generations. My mom wears them, my grandmother wears them, and I obviously wear them. Issa dresses are a go-to for women of any age wanting to channel a sensual and classic femininity.
  5. They are a favorite of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. Have I mentioned the “Kate Middleton Dress”? Period.

Issa’s dress selected by The Duchess of Cambridge for her big day sold out within a few hours

  6. Inspired by Brazil. Designer and native of Brazil, Daniella Helayel created Issa as a result of her country’s spectacular nature, bright colors, and characteristically laid-back, easygoing attitude to life.
  7. They’re luxuriously chic. The signature silk jersey fabric exudes a subtle sophistication you can’t get with off-the-rack pieces.
  8. … BUT there’s no luxury price tag. Issa dresses are high-end worthy at an affordable price. Can’t get much better than that.
  9. They’re impeccably constructed. Integrity in design is what separates high-end apparel from everything else. Issa dresses are made with the utmost attention to lasting quality.
  10. They’re comfortable. Silk jersey feels like a little piece of heaven on your skin – pair it with a flowing silhouette you can wear day & night and you have Issa.

60′s Power Players Rock Pan Am

The Beatles Arrival In America on a Pan Am Clipper & Wearing A Pan Am Bag

The Beatles arrive in America wearing a Pan Am bag

From The Beatles to President John F. Kennedy Jr., Pan Am rolled (or flew) with the best of ‘em. Oozing of 1960’s jet set glamour, it is no surprise the planes and subsequent travel accessories were the first choice of that era’s most influential celebs & power players. The iconic bags quickly became the talk of the town when the group made their American arrival at 1:20pm at JFK Airport on February 7, 1964. Director of ABC’s new series Pan Am Jack Orman reflects with The Telefile, “One of the most famous images in which a Pan Am plane formed a backdrop was The Beatles’ 1964 arrival at John F. Kennedy Airport aboard a Pan Am Boeing 707-321, Clipper Defiance.” Orman plans to re-enact the epic arrival of The Beatles in an episode for February sweeps (so chic!).

Cristina Ricci, the series’ most recognizable face, tells The Telefile:

I can’t wait for that episode. My sister and I shared a bedroom our entire lives and I believe she discovered the Beatles when she was about 11 and I’m four years younger. So from the age of 7 until 17 we had nothing but Beatles paraphernalia in our room, even those little stuffed Beatles that went on stands that are dressed as the Sgt. Pepper band. Every night I fell asleep to a different Beatles album. So I’m very familiar with the Beatles; Ringo was my favorite Beatle until I grew up and then changed. I made the switch over to George Harrison just in time to regain my cool.

So what this tells us was 60’s cool is now 2011 cool. Rock the Pan Am bags like the world’s most infamous rockers. Shop all the styles here!

Orion – My Newest Travel Companion

It’s grown on me – the Pan Am Orion bag. Its shape is flawless – curvy and smooth lines make the Orion bag a personal favorite from the Pan Am Originals collection. The size is to perfection as Dolce is to Gabbana. Not too big, not too small. It will fit your office papery, a laptop, your make up bag, and the latest glossies. Perhaps you fly the sky on a regular basis like we do and need a great bag to place underneath the seat in front of you… Voila! Pan Am Orion.

Pan Am Orion Bag - My Newest Travel Companion

Pan Am Orion Bag in jet black & vintage white available here!

If you’re into a great statement bag for the gym or spa, but aren’t into the bulk, Orion has a spacious interior we’d love to climb into (but for the sake of practicality we’ll leave it for our newest pair of dunks).

The durable PU exterior makes it perfect for on-the-go city girls. A little trickle from Mother Nature couldn’t damage this eye candy. The long strap means ease in travel, whether it’s at 30,000 feet or just to the market after a long day at the office. Detail oriented? The brushed nickel hardware – edgy yet sleek and embossed with the pan am logo. Don’t kid yourself; it’s all in the details.

If you’re looking for retro subtlety, go for the jet black with vintage white. Black is always easy to wear, in season, and goes with a great fashion day outfit. Not sure how to put it together? Try a great pair of dark denim wide leg jeans, platforms, bangles (like Malili Otoya’s peacock Mopa Mopa bangles for a splash of bold color) and a black silky blouse (try a sheer one if you’re feeling sassy) for the ultimate retro-modern mix. Get your travel companion here!

Voguette Stylist Traverses in Brandy Melville

It’s no secret that Europe holds the world’s most beloved architecture, art, and fashion – which becomes even more apparent when the fashion industry bombards the City of Love during Paris Fashion Week. Post Script… When we tell you a European getaway is not for the faint of heart, we mean it.

Voguette Stylist, Cristina Hoyos (wearing a Kayla Knit by Brandy Melville) and her boyfriend Luis at the Pont de Arts in Paris during Paris Fashion Week.

Check out this photo that just landed in our inbox, courtesy of Voguette stylist, Cristina Hoyos. While our Miami-appropriate wardrobes were green with envy about her effortlessly-the-coolest-stylist-on-the-block Paris Fashion Week day look, to our pleasant surprise Cristina was rocking Brandy Melville all over the fashion-forward continent, debuting collection best sellers in Paris & Madrid! The stylish Voguette forgot to mention her seemingly Brandy Melville themed trip… but we certainly took notice.

A personal favorite of mine is Brandy Melville’s Kayla Knit Sweater. This slouchy slightly sheer knit is a must-have basic for the season. Pourquoi, you ask? …Because if we’re being honest, these days we’re looking for the biggest bang for our buck and this top is wearable across all seasons, most occasions, and is unbelievably affordable.

Wear it off the shoulder with skinnies and perfectly Parisian flats for sightseeing and style-stalking like Cris, or pair it with a statement jewelry (like stacked Serefina Triple Wrap bracelets!), liquid leggings, and platform booties for a Euro-chic night look! Booties, yes – ‘cause as expensive beautiful as they are, your 6” and counting stilettos won’t work out. Eek! watch out for cobblestone walkways.
